Day 62-65 - Texas

Enroute to Texas we were inundated with more Route 66...we stayed at Santa Rosa, New Mexico (and Route 66 is pretty much all it has going for it)...and then we stayed our first night in Texas - at none other than the birthplace of Waylon Jennings - Littlefield, Texas.  We were welcomed by our first free campground!  It had services and everything - including being right next to the all night horseshoe field (about 25 horseshoe pits with lights no less).  At about 11:00pm we heard the tink of a horseshoe and looked at each other thinking...no way!  But - there was someone actually playing horseshoes at 11:00pm!  Hilarious.  The next morning, Jack had a dream come true...sitting in the drivers seat of a semi.  The owners were also taking advantage of the free campground - so exciting!

What is better than traveling the country in a motorhome?  Visiting with good friends!  With barely any notice, a sick child and a hyper puppy in tow, our friends Suzanne and J.L. and their kids, Caley and Shawyn warmly welcomed us into their home and spoiled us with yummy homemade meals, a city tour and relaxing fun.  Jack loved playing with Caley and Shawyn (and Shawyn's semi truck from the movie Cars) and Gus and their dog, Scooter tired themselves out running and biting each other in the 100+ degree heat.

I should mention that if you are planning on visiting friends in Lubbock, bring your wine and beer from another town!  I was pretty much laughed at when I asked in the grocery store where the beer was.  Lubbock is a "dry" town (apparently this means you have to travel to a place called the "strip" (done up with the neon lights just like Vegas) about 10 minutes away to get any alcoholic beverages.  After the strip, we toured cotton fields, a wind turbine museum (it is very windy in Lubbock!) and the Buddy Holly museum.  J.L. is a great tour guide!  The Lubbock area reminded us of Saskatchewan - except Lubbock has cotton fields and Buddy Holly and many more big singers).

We all had lots of fun and didn't want to leave!  But the road was calling...and off we went to Carlsbad Caverns back in New Mexico (Jack with a couple extra trucks from the Nolens!) Thanks for everything you guys!
